They say the forest was once a girl.
A girl with dark hair and a quiet voice, who played her harp beneath the moon because no one else would listen. She played for the owls, for the foxes, for the wind that curled through the branches. And the forest loved her for it.
But people didn’t.
They feared the way her music made the trees sway. They feared the way the shadows leaned toward her. They feared the way the night seemed to breathe with her song.
So one winter, when the snow lay heavy and the moon was thin as a blade, they took her harp and snapped its strings. They told her to stop playing. They told her to be quiet.
She didn’t listen.
She went into the forest instead.
Some say she froze there.
Some say she vanished.
Some say the trees opened their roots and swallowed her whole.
But everyone agrees on one thing:
The forest has never been silent since.
On certain nights, when the mist curls low and the moon hangs crooked, you can hear her again — not playing, but calling. A single trembling string, plucked by hands that are no longer hands at all.
And if you follow the sound, the forest will welcome you the way it welcomed her.
It will wrap its branches around you.
It will pull you close.
It will keep you.
Because the girl is gone now, and the forest is lonely.
And lonely things are hungry.
