I was really with you on this one; having your character be very young and also heavily into drinking/drugs is a choice. I felt the plot (as far as I read, I think I DNFed it at like 50% through, a rarity for me) would have been almost the same if the kids have been nineteen and sixteen but there was something offputting about how young the characters were and how messed up their lives were. Which I understand was sort of the point, but the combination of that, the heavy slang which didn't always feel authentic, and, yeah the whole religion/drugs part of it made me ultimately not want to go along for the ride with the author.
