Jed Henson It's happening! Pretty excited to see this movie. I thought they did a great job with The Martian movie adaptation. Here's the link to the trailer:

Steve Shelby Wow! Thanks!

I didn’t think Ryan Gosling was the guy, but … Hollywood. She doesn’t look like the best for the administrator of the project, but … Hollywood. It does look better than I expected when I heard the casting.

I still say, Project Hail Mary is the best techno-thriller book of all time. The Best Technothrillers Ever list has it rated about #200+ since I am possibly the only one to vote for it. That list … obsolete. It’s part of why I started a new set of lists for best technothrillers, even though hardly anyone is using them yet. Maybe everyone is on their phone these days, and using the phone app … because their phone prompts them to … because that’s often better and more interactive than the web site … except in this case. You can’t even see half the content on the terrible Goodreads phone app, and what you can see is formatted very badly. You cannot vote on book lists from the app. WTH?! Yeah, … and book groups like this … look terrible on the app. Can’t see or find stuff. I digress. Head-shaking tragedy. If you just use your phone browser instead, and scroll down to the bottom of the page to select desktop view/version, then … it’s OK. Night and day.

Jed Henson Yeah, not sure about the administrator either! I envisioned someone really icy I think.

I should know this, but where do I find the new lists?

Harry Buck Nice! Ryan is funnier in this clip than I remember the character in the book being.

It's been a couple years, I really liked the book after it got past the "banging his head on the ladder" bit at the start. :)

Steve Shelby The movie is out! Went and saw it last night.

Jed Henson I haven't seen it yet. how'd you like it?

Steve Shelby Go see it!

It feels too early to comment. Take it in fresh, with no opinions.

Simon Mortimer Leading question - I really like the Alex Garland 2007 movie 'Sunshine' - one of my favs actually, an edgy techno thriller / sci fi / philosophical journey with notes of horror thrown in (ticks all my boxes). Hail Mary - the basic premise seems very similar but with cutesy aliens and 'Ken from barbie' thrown in - like 'Disney does Sunshine'. That thought, like a dying sun, leaves me feeling a bit cold about going to see it.

I am happy to be proven wrong and 'give it a go' - thoughts / guidance welcome.

Jed Henson I saw it! I look forward to seeing it again on streaming when I can soak it in a bit more. I was pretty keyed up with preconceptions.

Simon Mortimer I will watch it for sure. I will probably have to wait for it to be streamed though, such is life atm. It seems to have generated a lot of hype and hopes for a resurgence of cinema. I do miss those times when a cinematic release prompted queues around the block to get in and had the ability to shift the cultural dial. Everything seems so fragmented nowadays and personalised to an extent that there is a loss of broader connection. Social media should perhaps be better termed anti-social media.

Steve Shelby If you haven’t read the book, I suggest you do. The movie trailer also spoils all sorts of elements of discovery from the book, which had me decidedly pissed off at the studio. As usual, the book is far better than the movie, though this is still the best movie of the year. The book is the best book of the decade … the 2020s … for any kind of fiction, not just science. Is the movie the best of the decade? Maybe. Movies haven’t been stellar since COVID-19. Is it better than Top Gun: Maverick? Hmmm. Maybe, but it’s subjective. It is better than Dune? Probably. Subjective. You can’t please everyone all the time, but anyone in this group will probably like it.

The Martian, by the same author, in contrast, is a movie that was the most faithful portrayal of a book I can remember, such that it is about the only story where I’d accept that seeing the move or reading the book are virtually the same experience. I actually liked the movie slightly better in that case.
