I'm 87 pages in reading it aloud with my wife and I've never been so bored reading something. You hit the nail on the head when you said the writing was amatuerish. It sounds exactly like it is: an upper class senior citizen decides to write a novel in retirement with abslutely no understanding of the craft of writing fiction. Bloated descriptions, no conflict, terrible pacing, one dimensional characters, and about 200 pages too long. Literally everything you could do wrong writing fiction is prolifically present in this novel. I feel the author thinks I am an exceptional idiot with how grossly explained everything is. On the positive side, it has helped my wife's insomnia tremendously though!
You make me feel like I made the right decision giving this one a pass. I read the entire preview and wondered if I was missing something, since this has been so popular and talked-about.
Well, I admire you for sticking with it and then warning the rest of us!
