Nancy Fantastic review, Rosh! I find it so interesting reading about the debunking of theories. Now I’m really curious which one of the five pop psych ideas has proven evidence. I’ll message you on IG to find out which one. ❤️

message 2: by Canadian Jen (new)

Canadian Jen I’m not a fan of this genre go figure my degree is in psychology and criminology. I always appreciate the science behind but think I’ve had my full of it. Glad this one delivered more than you expected. It’s a well thought out review, Rosh!

Thanks, Nancy! 💖 Given how popular those 5 ideas are, I was really surprised that only one has established evidence. Ping me on Insta whenever you want to know the answer. :)

Given your credentials, I sure would have expected you to grab this, Jen. :D But I get ya... I wouldn't have taken it were it not for my curiosity about how much BS the self-help sector actually contains. The book does a great job in that regard.

Jayme C (Brunetteslikebookstoo) I am curious which of those statements is the one with evidence because I have been “taught” that they all are true! Intriguing review!

Alessandra Bassi Intriguing review, Rosh!

message 7: by Berengaria (new)

Berengaria It's the Confirmation Bias that's the real one, I'll bet. I know the learning styles one isn't because of having been a teacher and the others seem quite dubious (and I just don't like affirmations!)

Thank you for including the tone of this work because too often, I've found, "debunker" books are written by arrogant, self-righteous people who have a hard core scientific-atheist POV and declare everyone a silly child who doesn't believe exactly the same things they do. Glad to hear this one doesn't go in for snooty shaming!

Dale Harcombe Terrific review Rosh.💜

message 9: by Darla (new)

Darla Intriguing review, Rosh! Sounds like a excellent book for keeping our minds agile.

message 10: by Dutchie (new)

Dutchie Fantastic review, Rosh! This isn’t my go to genre either. I listen to memoirs sometimes and as soon as they start leaning towards self help I end up DNFing. Only one of those pop psych theories is proven?🤔

message 11: by Brooke (new)

Brooke Fab review Rosh! ❤️

Alya ( 20 comments restriction ) Glad you enjoyed Rosh♥️ this looks intriguing

Srivalli Rekha Oh, this sounds like such a cool read. I'll have to add it to my TBR. They organized it well and didn't go overboard with the deets.
Superb review, Rosh. 🧡

message 14: by Thibault (new)

Thibault Busschots Glad it delivered what it promised, and that it was eye-opening and interesting, despite it not really being your genre.

21 days to form a habit? I don’t know. I would have guessed 14 days that would be enough.

And yay to brainstorming, if my brain doesn’t have to brace itself for the storm :)

Cool that you gave this a shot, and liked it. Good review, Rosh.

Shelley's Book Nook Fascinating review, Rosh. I'm not a fan of self help books either. 🤗💕

message 16: by Faerie (new)

Faerie This sounds fascinating. Fantastic review, lovely! ♡♡

message 17: by Donne (new)

Donne I'm going to take a wild stab and say that the Confirmation Bias is the true statement. Great review too!

message 18: by Caz (new)

Caz Fascinating review,Rosh! 💙😊

message 19: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Oh, this is so interesting! I think (I think!) that I know which one your list is the one with evidence ;) Awesome review, Rosh! 💖💕

message 20: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Excellent review, Rosh! It sounds interesting as hell on paper, but I fear it would be too factual and dry for me. I pretty much stick with fiction (reality can be too scary)!

message 21: by Nika (last edited Sep 04, 2026 12:37PM) (new)

Nika Great review, dear Rosh! I'd vote for ‘confirmation bias’ to be the common belief that has some real evidence, but who knows :)
The goal of this book appeals to me, especially since I strongly dislike broad generalisations, half-truths, and one-sidedness. It is really helpful to check the credibility of pop psych ideas.
Thank you for making me aware of this book. I might look into it later.

message 22: by Karly (new)

Karly Great review Rosh and interesting content. I agree self help is not my cup of tea either but this does sound interesting.

message 23: by Ian (new)

Ian Payton That sounds right up my street! Fortunately, it's also on a "Read Now" on NetGalley, so I've successfully requested it :-) Great review, Rosh!

Rosh (on a medical break) Thanks for your kind comments, everyone!
I have so many intelligent friends! All those who answered 'Confirmation Bias' got it right. It is the only one of these to have proven evidence. All the others are products of self-help books that took an actual concept and distorted it to such generalisation.

Berengaria: You are spot on about the arrogance usually present in such books. I can't read them beyond a few pages. This was a welcome exception.

Thibault: The '21 days' numbers comes from a very popular self-help book. You'd be surprised by how many people think it is true.

Nika: I hope you enjoy the book whenever you get to it. :)

Ian: I'm feeling the pressure now! :D Hope the book goes well for you.

message 25: by Kealyn (new)

Kealyn The difficult thing for me with these kind of books is the preachy vibe that often accomponies them. I rarely enjoy them too. I'm happy this one was a winner for you though.
