Agreed..being unfamiliar with the author, this story took me by surprise in a good way
I too was unfamiliar with the author. I picked the book up at the library after I saw it had been longlisted for last year's Booker Prize. Glad I did. Thanks for your comment.
My pleasure Bob..Another author who won the Booker in 2016 is Paul Beatty though his stories are both hilarious and thought provoking..Am about to finish White Boy Shuffle having loved The Sellout..he's brilliant and laugh out loud funny, a rare combination
I appreciate your recommendation, Jonathan, but I'm not a huge fan of Paul Beatty. I'm sure I'm the minority in this regard. Maybe I'll give him another try at some point, but I have so many things I want to read. . . . I'm sure you know what I mean. Right now I'm reading a writer new to me, Alexander Maksik, whose most recent novel is longlisted for this year's National Book Award. I'm reading his first novel, You Deserve Nothing, which is quite good (as a former professor I really like the novel's classroom scenes), though there are parts that, well, I'm not so sure about. So far, I'd characterize the novel as very thoughtful and very troubling--and very well written.
