Helen Letting the characters lead makes for a truly emotionally engaging story. It requires having faith in one's instincts when writing this way, but it works for me too. And I do love your Royal Spyness books!

Stef You asked Rhys, of course, but may I say as an avid reader of cozy series: Planning is what is lacking with a lot of Firsts. As a reader, you want a complete crime story, but if you are to read on, you also want a story going on in the background.
You have to create a character with a background story, even when it's only going to be a one-of. I firmly believe in that.
Then, when you are sure your first story is good, make sure there are "bridges" over to the next possible installment, but don't create a real cliffhanger. We readers HATE it when new authors publish 100 pages and the story is not complete and we then have to go and pay for the next "installment" as much as we would pay for a full-fledged book by a renowned author.
Emma, please notify me when your first book is about to be published.
