Wendy I think in pictures and when a particular picture leaves a strong impression I write it down. For instance with A Tangled Web of Time the picture was like a film. I knew the woman was woken by the sound of music. That she was alone in the house. I had to write it all down before I lost it and it jut kept going. Chain Reaction began by a picture of a body by a steam and Chasing Shadows - a man in an overcoat standing under a street lamp on the corner of a street.
I do use items from the news, memories etc to fill the story and I also do a lot of research - for A Tangled Web I needed to know what it was like in the Two I's coffee bar and was lucky enough to be able to talk with Vince Eager. He was great and talked to me for over an hour.. I do agree though, the internet can be very useful in plot generation.
