Outside Yes, I understand that, but the tension would have been felt throughout Ireland especially during to the Home Rule debate. On what evidence do you base such extremely opposite viewpoints? Was there some cultural research you did to confirm such overt friendliness toward police during that time?

Catherine Howard I was born here and have lived here most of my life. The events in The Nothing Man predominately take place in the late 1990s/early 2000s when I was in my early twenties and living in the area in which the book is set. My evidence is my lived experience.

Tracey Also, the Republic of Ireland came in to being in the 1940s, so Home Rule was not in question at the time. The tension from the Troubles was not felt throughout the country, there were some skirmishes in border towns and I believe one incident in Dublin ( my parents and grandparents were alive and in Dublin at the time, in case you want my authorities). The Republic, being no part of Britain, was not divided culturally the way the North was. There was no need to be mistrustful of the police and, therefore, no need to not co-operate with them.
