I think about Ulysses, and how totally packed full of references to like random ads for "potted meats" that academics now spend years obsessing over...Now they can obsess over Scott from Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Exactly. Scott is definitely the most interesting character, so their interest is merited.
Plus, I don't think dating a book is a bad thing - I think of it more as anchoring a book in its time setting.

Plus, I don't think dating a book is a bad thing - I think of it more as anchoring a book in its time setting.
