I think he was so frantic and out of touch with reality he didn't know fully what he was doing. It's also interesting that Cass's friend was visiting a passage grave near their homeland and she is drawn back too, she wanted to visit this grave at the start instead of the party, that mixed with the story of 100 years with the fairies and everyone gone also seems to foreshadow death in the family.
