Thank you for your reply. As you can tell, I was thinking about your book and the characters long after I finished reading it. I did not realize that Thomas was a name frequently used in India.
We went to a Church near Cochin, I think, wher they supposedly have a relic, being St Thomas's finger...
Oh, I loved this book! Thank you for reminding me of it :)
I read somewhere that ca. 1800 in England virtually every male had one of about a half dozen or so Norman names -- Charles, Edward, William, etc.
