You know, I hated Dorothy Must Die. I'd rather read whatever you've got cooking as opposed to what Danielle Paige wrote. *shrugs*
Thanks for that! I'll definitely write it one day. The premise has never been done, so I'm excited to tackle it. ;)
At the moment, I'm contracted for another YA, kind of a spin off of another classic, that will be out in 2016. I hope to announce it officially soon! I'm supposed to keep it under wraps until my publisher gives me the green light.
BTW, do you like portal books? If so, have you read the Nevermore Series by Kelly Creagh? I've read the first two and the third is coming up on my TBR soon. It's similar to Splintered in that it's a YA, and there's a mystical world alongside the real world, though it's based on Edgar Allan Poe. It's dark, horrific, and beautiful. Her prose is stunning. It's one of my favorite series right now. :)
I do like portal books, Dorothy Must Die not withstanding. I think I've heard of the Nevermore books, but didn't give them more an a passing glance. Looking it up on Barnes and nobles.com it's listed with the Hush, Hush and Torment series. I tried Fallen, didn't make it through book one. So I'm curious to know what makes the Nevermore series different from them.
You could always write the story on the side and present it to your editor and agent later. ^_~
I haven't read Fallen or the others you listed. So I can't offer insights. All I know is that Miss Creagh's prose is more lush and her world building more descriptive and complex than some YA books I've seen.
Of course that's really subjective, so you might disagree were you to read them. If you can find a short excerpt somewhere, maybe on her website, that might be the best way to decide if you want to invest in the first book.
And haha! If ONLY I had time to write anything on the side. When I'm under contract, I have to have tunnel vision and work only on that project, because the deadlines are seriously tight. Six months to write a 100K novel. @.@ Not easy for someone who writes fantasy.
But no worries. I'll get it out there one day. I plan on writing until I'm old and gray.
Just for grins you should do NaNo this year. ^_^

@ A.G. Howard, re the Nevermore Series: I checked out a sample of the Nevermore Series! I really liked what I read. There were some cliche moments, but overall I enjoyed I! It's going on my TBR pile.
Ooh! If you do write a Wizard of Oz spinoff I'd definitely be excited to read! :)
