ReemK10 (Paper Pills) Oh Julian, you got me thinking about Arrabbiata pasta sauce being called Sicilian gravy, and I wondered if you think this might actually be an Arab recipe from the period when the Muslims ruled Sicily? Think about it, tomatoes, garlic, red chilli peppers (Tunisian harissa) and olive oil. The words coming from Arab and atta (tomato). There may be a link there, just like I am convinced that Vladimir comes from Wlad Amir, son of the prince in Arabic. Those are my theories, and I'm throwing them out there! :)

Julian Gallo It's very possible, actually. Especially when you consider how many foods were brought to Sicily by the Arabs. I think it would surprise even a lot of Italians. :-)

ReemK10 (Paper Pills) This is all so fascinating. You keep opening doors for me to go through!

ReemK10 (Paper Pills) The great Sicilian Arab poet Ibn Hamdis, who in his life knew the pain of exile from his beloved island, wrote, more than seven centuries ago:

"I spoke the word Sicily and longing troubled my heart. A man exiled from a paradise can do nothing but tell of the things he has lost."
