Jonathan Palfrey Thanks for the thoughful reply. It reminds me of the Rivers of London series, in which there’s a limit to the amount of magic you can do, but you don’t know what the limit is. If you exceed the limit, you get brain damage.

Sandy I always imagined that the sorcery, in the moment, connects/links the victim and demon, and if the victim then dies in that moment the demon is taken with their soul because of that connection. (Like in the sharing knife with interlocked grounds. Which may likely have contributed to my interpretation since I read those before Penric came along) So I always assumed more indirect acts of sorcery, such as you describe with a bridge, where the sorcery is done to the bridge itself and only later people are killed, would not have the same effect as a direct, intentional killing because the demon would not be "connected" or linked to the victim. I hadn't really thought more about it, so this was a very interesting question, and great answer. It's opened an interesting new perspective for me to ponder over. I will certainly be thinking about these things on my future re-reads.
