Here's what William Faulkner had to say about his approach, which is similar to ours I think:

In one of my series it resulted in me throwing away my outline and watching as the characters led me in a totally different direction.
For another (unreleased) book I wound up a quarter of the way through when I realized that the characters had simply refused to have sex. That's operator error: I hadn't set the rules of the house correctly.
I think it's a tribute to your skill in being able to make this technique work so incredibly well. My hat's off to you. (Once I figure out how to render an image of my avatar without the hat.)
