I tried to Google the question, and it seems that $500 in the early 1860s would be worth approximately $10,000 now. Although I think the calculation of inflation relies on pricing a basket of goods and services. The contents of the basket are determined subjectively, and what’s in there will change gradually over time, so it’s all very inexact. Common items available today weren’t available at any price in the 1860s.
