I loved the movie! Still one of my favorite movies of all time! And, of course, it brought me to the book :)
I read the book first and loved it. The movie was a great disappointment since I was expecting it to be a more faithful rendition of the book.
I hated the movie ... so incredibly disappointing! Even if it hadn't been for the fact that it absolutely ruined the plot, the characters ... everything about the original (quite amazing!) fairytale ... I wouldn't have liked it. Really corny and what was the deal with the random singing?!
I enjoyed the movie and the book, I just got two great adventures that were so fun to experience. I just separated the two from each other and everything was good.
Ella Enchanted was my favorite book when I was growing up. I think I read it about twenty or thirty times - it's still as beautiful a read at 25 than it was at 11! I have my original copy from childhood and I love the way it's worn from so much use. I moved around a lot and had trouble making friends; Ella was like a friend to me, as cheesy as that sounds. Her personality was so real and so refreshing.
When I heard they were making a movie I was ecstatic. But it wasn't the rustic fantasy you painted so well in the novel. I like that Hollywood appreciated the book enough to adapt it, but the vibe was totally different and I'm not surprised readers were turned off to it.
I agree that the movie did not tell the same story as the book. I would love to see a remake a the movie using an actress that is lesser known and one that's a little younger. Anne Hathaway just was not the right casting for that role to keep the tone of the book.
Saw the movie first, loved it. Read the book later and LOVED LOVED LOVED it! My daughter then read the book and agreed. A very important book for girls to read, I think.
I loved the book, but couldn't stand the movie at all. Some parts of it were enjoyable, like the budding romance between Ella and Char, and others I could understand, like the whole part with the elves. But the whole addition of the evil uncle just annoyed me, I felt like it lessened the impact of Dame Olga and her daughters, when their cruelty was such a major point in the book. I also disliked the way the movie portayed Ella responding to the orders, it felt more realistic for her to struggle a little. I also missed the more medieval setting of the book. That said I almost always prefer the book, and this was definitely not the worst adaptation I have seen.
