Yes, genres are just type of writing (romance, biography, memoir, fantasy, historical fiction, etc.) If you're going to write that kind of story for your grandchildren, I suggest you check out the children's picture books ENCYCLOPEDIA BROWN, BOY DETECTIVE (Sobol), NATE THE GREAT (Sharmat), HOMER PRICE (McClosky), NANCY CLANCY (O'Connor). Or were you planning to write something for older children more on the order of Nancy Drew or Trixie Beldon?
You could also try recording stories for your grandchildren. I've done that before too, and my son plays them at bedtime (usually they read aloud to the girls before bed, but sometimes they're really tired, and it's nice for them to have an audio file they can just play.) Make them some little finger or hand puppets, and they may start retelling the stories themselves.
There are a lot of ways to connect. Good luck to you! You never know what you'll end up producing! My stories grew into something far more sophisticated than I ever envisioned. And now my granddaughters play "book launch" because they had so much fun at my event.

Again thank you so much.
