J Earl Hi, I didn't ask the initial question and I'm not sure that my variation will be any more focused but... I would be interested in knowing how you move from a basic idea to the conflict(s) that will turn it into a story. For instance, people always suggest that someone write a story about what they do (or did), which is very broad and usually based on the idea that the job or hobby is inherently interesting. But moving from that broad suggestion or idea means taking some aspect of the larger concept and deciding what aspects to use and where to put whatever conflicts will keep the story moving. So, long question, well, yet longer, how do you go from an idea about a story (place, occupation, whatever) and find the conflict to turn it into a story? After all that I could probably have saved time and just asked the question, huh?

Michelle Files Hi Earl. That's a really good question. I often get my ideas from old news stories that I read. Even some from a century ago. Or even from something I see on TV. I don't duplicate it. I just take the basic idea and go in a different direction with it.
