I, too, have The Haunting of Hill House on my list of favorites. Along with "Rebecca", one of the best opening lines I've ever read.
Oh, yes--great opening line! If we want to talk best closing lines, I love the ones to 'A River Runs Through It' and 'Memoirs of a Geisha.' Well, and 'The Lord of the Rings,' of course.
