I pretty much agree with that, but I'm also a guy who once got his ass well and truly kicked trying to rescue a (completely unknown) girl from a guy who had just punched her in the face in a bar. It was the right thing to do, morally speaking, and I don't regret it. But in a post apocalyptic world I guess we wouldn't have such chivalric sensibilities.

Rob Turnbull Funny how a person's perspective looks after a time. While I still feel the same way, particularly the instant connection, but I have read several books recently that did it right, paced it correctly, and it added to the story.
So did your chivalry pay off? Did you ride off into the sunset with the girl? Does being the white knight get you the damsel?
Totally unrelated question: What are your thoughts on collaborating on a book? I just started one with another fan of dystopian fiction and could use any pointers on pitfalls.

Rob, the chivalry was just so much pissing into the wind. She didn't even care... Still, you've got to laugh.

As far as collaborations go, I was a ghostwriter for a world-famous international bestselling 'author' once, and I would never do it again. If you do collaborate with someone, lay down specific ground-rules before you begin - in writing. I'm not kidding.
