Humor is definitely essential to survival. I think people have become too easily offended due in part to technology that let's people say almost anything with out consequence but mostly because you have no personal reference to judge what is being said and how it was really intended. You can't see the face, hear the inflections etc. and that disconnect causes a lot of problems.
