Hmmm. Have you read Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray? Or if you like more modern, quiet yet powerful horror, Laird Barron and Greg Gifune come to mind
Dorian Gray is truly a classic - easily in my top 5. I've done some literary analysis of it (and Poe's detective stories maybe others) online somewhere. I tend to share Poe's views when it comes to literary criticism.
