Shades of 'Hill House'! (Possibly, literally)
Absolutely. Most frightful scene ever; and I have tried to steal it before. Alas, best I can do is borrow. I love Shirley Jackson.
This reminded me of a nightmare I once had, that we were sitting at the dining table and someone squeezed my hand, yet no one accepted to have done the deed! I was scared to death obviously...
As Mr. Tanafon points out, it is an iconic scene in Hill House. So much more subtle than a floating head, or lunatic with axe. And yet far more chilling. Ms. Jackson had the secret: it is the small things which most truly terrify.
