I guess it is the way it is. Ups and downs in the industry, and in us. Any creative field has to deal with this
"Be patient and kind with yourself." That is a very profound statement, and one that is translatable to many facets of life. Good advice! :)
As I'm looking at the business of being an author, I'm noticing a couple of trends. One, self-published authors are making more, and two, the biggest income streams for authors are not written books (in ebook or print), but audio books, subscriptions, and merchandise.
So, yes, the situation is really dire for people who want to just write novels all day and there is a lot of competition.
But authors who develop even average business skills can end up in the top 10% or 20% of authors by income. This is not to say forget about writing... but the biggest differentiator between authors who support themselves and those that don't will be business skills and not writing.
