I found The final Shadowfell book darker and more disturbing than the Blackthorn and Grim books.
It was quite dark, yes, with graphic violence. I actually re-wrote the big battle scene to make it more so, at my editor's request. My general feeling about Shadowfell was that each book was a bit more adult than the last.
