The horses and their sport has really come from practical experience over more than 40 years, but I can thank books for that initially. Like yourself, I was very interested about wildlife and the environment and read anything that featured animals, mainly zoology-related non-fiction. But I picked up a biography of a racehorse, at the age of 13, and that set my future. Most of what I read won't have any real influence, I read for pleasure and escapism, but, as you say, you never know what sparks the next idea or where you'll use information picked up. Mainly I like humour and fiction and Terry Pratchett is my favourite in that respect. I love the Anne Rice vampire books, but I also like checking out the new publications featured in the monthly Irish Writers' Union newsletter and that leads me to reading genres I wouldn't usually choose and getting to know lots of new authors.
