Lissa Oliver That last bit is so true and explains a lot in why we don't ourselves understand our subconscious or know why we react in certain ways. Yes, a DNA fear, or any life-lesson, does exist. It has been proven in mice, where learned behaviours are passed on through generations by DNA and not simply through learning experiences. For example, a female mouse eats a disagreeable berry. her offspring may never encounter that berry, but in subsequent generations her descendants, if they do encounter it, will instinctively know to avoid it. The descendants f another mouse will not know to avoid it. Fascinating stuff! We need to understand what makes our characters tick and can only do our best, but finding something that creates empathy with a reader is key.
