You already made a great setup with tunnels of unknown origins and use, strange symbols, a curious lack of iron, a large boarding school build during a war and the disappearance of the owner (whom was said to be very wealthy). I believe this could be used for a very interesting mystery novel. I do believe it would require some creative thinking to make it work as a stand alone story/novel but this should be doable :).
Oh, you mean "The Mystery of the Bronze Needle," where there are a series of strange murders on the estate, all a series of "more traditional" owners who want to put up shields and spread suits of armor around and so forth.
I think we all know whodunit, though.
