Mary Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! Looking up these books right now.

Sherwood Smith Some excellent sources of memoirs (I really need to get all this stuff into Goodreads, but I never seem to find the time): Life before the Mast, ed. John E. Lewis, The Eyes of the Fleet, Anthony Price, Every Man Will Do His Duty, ed. Dean King, and as for pirates, I have a whole shelf of stuff. A lot of books about pirates are tripe, even if fun reading. I guess this wasn't considered an academic subject! *g*

Mary Great, this is so helpful! In writing this book I've realized a love for ships does not equal extensive knowledge of them. Working on making the next draft less vague.

Sherwood Smith If you're writing a book I highly encourage you to find a way to walk aboard a tall ship. Yes it's tough (it took a great deal of effort for me to just tour one--I can't afford to sail on one overnight) but the experience can't be captured by reading.
