I should add a note about June as well. I wanted to name her after a famous literary mother, as she is so strong, loving and maternal, but also feels incredible guilt over her estrangement with her son. She was very nearly Ruth after the mom in "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe." I also batted around Rose from the mom in "The Glass Castle." Talk about your polar opposites. I wanted a combo of the two personas. A mom who'd made mistakes. A woman who'd fight to the death for those she loved and whose heart overflowed with tenderness. A June Cleaver meets June Osborne of "The Handmaid's Tale." I know that neither of those women is African American, but I really wanted the mother figure of the series to be a woman of color. So that's how June Winthrop came to be.
