I agree with your assessment about Remus- the fact that he went into bootlegging after watching clients pay his fees by flippantly throwing hundred dollar bills on his desk, almost makes sense.
Definitely makes sense. After researching Remus, I understood why Boardwalk Empire never spent too much time on him; he would have overtaken the narrative, drawing the action away from Nucky and Atlantic City. His story was just too sprawling and deserved its own spotlight.
