I think publication order works best for most series for the first pass through.
Actually, GoodReads does not automatically put your books in order by reader ranking. It looks like the default is "reader popularity" -- which means the number of individual ratings. If you click on "122 distinct works", the resulting list can be sorted by several options: title, popularity, average rating, pub date, and (oddly), number of pages.
