I'm an editor myself, and read it carefully as referring to Ravenna's hand, not his own, the FIRST time (before finishing), which implied that Berengar thought AT THAT TIME that Ravenna had killed her husband (understandable), which puzzled me, since the narration did not clearly state his thought, and it otherwise did throughout, rather than hint.
