[close] Group for discussion about Secular Humanism. Generally for those who either are Secular Humanists, or those who want to know about it. Support for info & books about Secular Humanism. Not for religious people to slam or otherwise put down. Non-religious (secular) morals & ethics derive from conscience and observation of the world in terms of reality ("let your conscience be your guide"). Ethics are preferred to synthesized morals and are practical, and work realistically. Science confirms reality and the real world around us and helps better explain and define it. "Secular" denotes "without and free of religion" as the U.S. government is supposed to be (see Separation Of Church And State). "Humanist" denotes being human, a member of humanity, and support of and by fellow human beings; i.e. social cooperation of and by equals. Also, being free of bias, prejudice and racism; but being a rational, reasoning, and objective person. But whichever side of the semicolon divide you fall, please leave your opinions and views here, but be nice... at least try to be nice, because, after all, it's only punctuation?! About Me/Tom Conrad and why I set up this group: I used a fair few commas, dashes, exclamation marks and especially ellipses in my début novel, Rich Pickings For Ravens, but not one solitary semicolon. It's what inspired my latest novella, That Semicolon Bitch Had To Die.... I realised I hadn't used them, wondered why I didn't, was it purely coincidental or some previously dormant/unrealised prejudice lying deep within my unconscious. Anyway, I started to write That Semicolon Bitch Had To Die...., spoke to friends about semicolons, soon realising everyone seems to have a view, and I even found that beautiful quote by Kurt Vonnegut. All of which means, here I am, and here you are, maybe/hopefully.
