[close] Dear Readers, I don't know about you, but time to time I feel thirst for knowledge and excitment that there are countless books out there that can satisfy my curiousity. But to understand the present we have to be educated from the past. The purpose of this book club is to go through basic topics and classic literary works, so that our knowledge doesn't have gaps, and we have a well-founded ground from where we can understand the present and work for a better future. The plan is to read one book each month and during this month having conversations about it. This is a democratic group so everyone can have book suggestions and can freely express their opinion about the readings. If you fancy the idea, join up, be active and let's plug the holes on the wall of our knowledge.

[close] Study and discussion of the important questions of ethical and political philosophy from Confucius and Socrates to the present. Rules (see also the Rules and Housekeeping topic): Subject to copyright law and these rules, posters may cite, link, or quote any publication, including their own. Posts linking to outside sources must contain a brief explanation of the nature of the linked material and, unless obvious, how it is relevant to the topic being discussed. All posts and linked material must be in English. Posts and any linked material should be polite and not degenerate into ad hominem attacks. The purpose here is to seek light, not heat—rational discourse, not shouting matches. Leave your cable news persona at home and put on your philosopher's mantle when entering this group. Rational argumentation and Socratic questioning are welcome. Hectoring, intimidation, insult, and presumptuous condescension toward other group members are cause for immediate removal from the group. Internet "trolls," advocates of violence, and posters failing to comply with these rules will be removed from membership, as will posters who persist in raising issues that are outside the scope of the subject matter of this group. [close] A group to discuss the books that have had the greatest influence on American conservatism and new books relating to American conservatism. This group has its origin in a series on www.donttread.com entitled the The Great Works of American Conservatism. The Great Works of American Conservatism series highlights the writings, speeches, and art that have had the most influence on American Conservatism from its inception through the present. American Conservatism is a one of a kind, unique political philosophy. It is a strange synthesis of philosophies respecting God, human dignity, liberty, the rule of law, order, individual freedom and equality. American Conservatism is a radically liberal philosophy. Unfortunately, today's progressives have moved away from this original American philosophy, and American conservatives must now defend our American system.
