Banned books have been an integral yet problematic part of our cultural existence for centuries. Midtown Reads Banned Books 2017 is a new book club jointly sponsored by Midtown Public Library and Midtown College Library to create an awareness that the freedom to read is never secure, and this freedom must be defended by all citizens - even in our own community. During the American Library Association's annual Banned Books Week (September 24-30, 2017), we encourage you to browse the banned and challenged books on the bookshelf below, read reviews of these books, check out banned books from our libraries, and offer your own opinions once you have read a book from the bookshelf. You might be surprised to learn that you have already read many banned/challenged books! Our librarians have also created a community bookshelf called "Midtown's Favorite Banned Books" for you to upload your favorite banned books. Happy reading!

Especially with her recent passing, I would love to connect with other readers who have enjoyed her many books. I am in the midst of a re-read of all of her works, and if anyone is interested, we could perhaps choose one a month to have some discussion about. Or just pop in to offer up comments on books you have read by her. Also, suggestions for similar authors is welcome. I have never started a group in here, but when I did a search on her name and no groups came up, I decided to just start one myself.
