1232518 Quick reminder that Banned Books Week is October 5th-11th. It's an annual event sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) which celebrates the freedom to read what you want and highlights current and past attempts to censor material. Books that have previously been banned by governments: Alice in Wonderland, Brave New Word, The Grapes of Wrath, Green Eggs and Ham (really!!), and Madame Bovary, just to name a few. And the list of challenged books is even longer, and includes some utterly subversive works as Harry Potter and James and the Giant Peach! So show your freedom-to-read pride and choose a banned/challenged book!
Scifi / Fantasy novels are often targeted because they dare to feature such horror as racial equality and diverse gender roles.

There is plenty of additional info and recommendations here: https://www.ala.org/bbooks. Any banned / challenged books on your reading list?

1232518 Julien’s “Bid Long & Prosper Auction” will take place November 11. Among all the Star Trek costumes, props, and documentation going under the hammer, there are a bunch of original series items including parts of the Enterprise bridge, original costumes, and a “William Shatner Captain James T. Kirk Hero Screen-Matched Communicator Prop” which is expected to fetch one of the highest prices, in the six-figure range. Your chance to own a piece of nerdy history!

1232518 It's Banned Books Week this week - an annual awareness campaign promoted by the American Library Association (ALA) that celebrates the freedom to read, draws attention to banned and challenged books, and highlights persecuted individuals. SciFi and Fantasy are frequently targeted (maybe because they make you think?), and these challenged / banned books include The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Fahrenheit 451 (a book about a future where books are banned), Ender's Game, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale, and more. Even the new Romantasy novels are getting called out, particularly Sarah J. Maas and A Court of Thorn and Roses series. See the link below for many of the titles SciFi/Fantasy that have been targeted, or visit the ALA's official website for additional resources.

1232518 Did you know? Dungeons & Dragons officially turned 50 years old this year. The Fantasy role-playing game began in 1974 with a game published by TSR, Inc. Here's a short piece NPR just did remembering the game and its continued impact.

1232518 Came across this article that I thought might be of interest. The author points out that terminology for Romance novels are getting tossed around too loosely, so calling a book spicy may not mean what you think it means.

If you're interested in knowing a little more about the author (who passed away in 2013), this is a link to an interview with childhood friend and fellow Scottish author Ken MacLeod discussing what Banks was like, writing style, and inspirations.
