um.i can't type coherant words about this books.
it is, i believe, the best YA book out there, period.
it's so good i refuse to loan it out to anyone, because i want it by me at all times.
im aware bigging a book up so much is bound to make it fail in a lot of peoples eyes. but. i just think its brilliant.
the only reason i haven't suggested it, is because it IS young adult. and i know thats not everybodys cup of tea.
oh. i must have forgot to reply to this thread. i definitely read it, because i remember thinking, "oh good. she really IS a witch. awesome."
So there are two book options as usual for August, but they are both contemporary. We'll be giving the classic a miss for that month, and seeing as these two were tied in their votes, I figured they could both be put up.
So we have an option to avoid Eat Pray Love at any cost.
I kid.
Although not really, coz i didn't like that book. So i think it's obvious what choice i'll be going with!
YES ME.I LOVE THIS BOOK.
so much it calls for caps.
i have two copies. i will post you one leelee. although, it might not reach you till the end of the month. BUT. everyone needs to read this at least once.
no, i don't even have it. i did see it for real cheap in a shop the other day... i just can't remember which shop. hmm.
i still haven't finished freakin' pillars!
i am not getting on with this book.so, i'm not really a historical fiction fan anyway. why is this? maybe being from a country that has so much history, i just take it for granted. i don't know.
it's not a hard read, but its just so damn boring.
i love philip, but i can already predict that his character is going to end up taking a back seat for the escapades of waleran that are soon to come.
and lee, your comment about ellen not getting more airplay. does this mean she has gone? i'm past the point where she leaves tom builder. has she gone forever? tell me we actually find out why everyone is so scared of her, please!
okay, so, i am pretty much hating this book.BUT.
at the very beginning, when we learn about philip, and how his parents were killed. that was good stuff for me.
mostly because i am half welsh and half english, and still encounter this prejudice today. i live in wales, i have a welsh name and a welsh mother, but i am very much a cockney london girl, with a cockney london accent.
dan is just plain english, and middle class english at that.
racist remarks are still constantly made from my welsh family.
when my mum went home and told her mam and dad that she was marrying my dad, my grandad's brother came round a little while later. and my grandad said to him,
"you never guess what beth has gone and done now...she's only marrying an english man."
they were nooooot happy for a long time. but my dad is a good english man, and won them over eventually.
i just like that part of the book. also, its funny for me to imagine philip's voice as a welsh accent. a NORTH welsh accent at that, they are very harsh.
it arrived last week and i'm only a couple of chapters in.it's maHOOsive!
at least we will feel accomplished when it is finished, sara.
you know. i actually liked the da vinci code! hee.again, quit with the judging.
i think dan brown does conspiracy well. i don't think he writes well though, and this makes for a very weird combinations.
considering he's an author and all...
in may.i read ONE book. and it wasn't even GOOD. and i knew it wasn't going to be good, but i had to read it because i watched the film.
i love tom hanks. this is why i watched and then read, Angels and Demons. don't judge me people.
i'm getting to it this month.
i havn't got this yet.but i'm gonna bet i feel the same way when i do.
i regularly read the last pages about a quarter of the way into the text.
I have three parts that made me laugh out loud towards the end of the book."I stare forlornly at the windows of car 48, wondering how to break the news to Marlena that we now own an elephant..."
"Dear God. Not only am I unemployed and homeless, but I also have a pregnant woman, bereaved dog, elephant, and eleven horses to care of."
"Later that night, Marlena and I sneak into the menagerie and bring Bobo back to our stateroom.
In for a penny, in for a pound."
I think Gruen is great at subtle, dry humour.
don't read this if you don't want spoilers :)its a bit of a habbit for me to prefer the 'baddie' in the book/film/programme etc. i just always find them more interesting, and in a book that i felt was made up of poorly developed characters, August was my shining beacon.
what did you all think of him, ladies? did you sympathise? did you hate him? were you glad when queen rosie (the star of the book, blates) killed him?
i quite loved me some August. don't get me wrong, i'm not as sad as i am over Walter dieing, the TRUE hero of this book. but still sad none-the-less.
