For a walk in an ocean town, ‘cuz this town just an ocean now.You don’t hate the summers, you’re just afraid of the space
These re my thoughts for Truly devious by Maureen Johnson, a two star read for me.I expected more … way to much apparently:
The premise of this book was cute. A teen detective sent to a 100 year old boarding school teaming with secrets? Heck yah. The character development was pretty good, and the body of the book was fairly twisty and it kept me going. But those were the only reasons I didn’t give this book 1 star.
Now onto the (many) reasons this book missed the bar:
(understatement of the year folks)
- the writing style was awful. Stevie (MC) was grumpy, miserable, and very unrelatable.
- though some of the character development was good, other characters felt rushed and unestablished.
- here’s the real kicker: NOTHING HAPPENS. Stevie finds all these clues and thinks she’s onto some great case, but LITERALLY NOTHING HAPPENS. THERE IS NO PLOT BECAUSE THERE IS NO STORY. I understand this is the first book of a series, but the best series start with what was meant to be a standalone. The book then became to popular that the author made a sequel, and so on and so forth. This book was clearly planned to be part of a series. It ended with a so called “cliff hanger” that I saw coming a mile away. The perfect one is always hiding something. I literally turned the last page going, ‘so wait where’s the book part? 🤨 did I miss it?’
To sum it up: it’s a short life where you can only read so many books. Not worth the hype or your time.
Hmmm it doesn’t look like she did a collab w Cassandra Clare. (If she did I would know about it 😂) CC did a few collabs with Maureen Johnson (another mystery author). Maybe that’s what your think abt?
