Thanks to everyone who came to our meeting on Monday! I just uploaded the books we talked about on the Oly Reads bookshelf. In addition to the books added today (11/20/2013), we also discussed a book called "A Very Curious Man" (which I couldn't find record of online), the author Dave Zirin for great sports & politics books, Molly Ringwald's books (wasn't sure which title we discussed), and - of course - cat nonfiction. :)Anyone can start a discussion to plan our next meeting - once a date/time and location are chosen, I'm happy to post an official event!
At Swing! We just posted an event. Please RSVP accurately at either the event here or over on the event on FB. See you there!
Hi Keri and Stephanie! Our frequency varies a lot. There was a time when we were meeting once a month or so, but now it's been quite some time (several months). We are definitely ruminating on setting up a meeting sometime during the summer, though, so stay tuned to the events posted here!
Thanks for coming, everyone! We had 21 people and Al Forno was awesome about opening an hour early and letting us take over the restaurant for three hours! The books we talked about are now on the Oly Reads bookshelf. Let me know if there are corrections, etc.
Just in case anyone is reading this and not in the Oly Reads group... We did go ahead and book an official OlyReads event for Monday, January 21st (also known as MLKJ Day, so hopefully most people are off work), at 4pm at Al Forno in Olympia. Check the Oly Reads events for more information and to RSVP. Hope to see many of you there!
We're working on booking a meeting for mid-January. TBA soon. We don't all read the same book. Instead, we all take turns highlighting exceptional books we've read since the last meeting, while eating and drinking. :) Hope to see you at the next meeting! Stay tuned!
We do, Jim and Corrine! We've fallen down a bit on the pre-planning, but we'll try to get something a bit more organized together after the holidays. Thanks for the interest!
Seriously. I talked Bad Monkeys at the first OlyReads meeting I ever went to. ... And I'm gonna be at a training all day. SO BUMMED.
Let me know if you want recommendations on the Christian Fiction, Agatha. I read a LOT of it when I was a teen. So my recommendations will be about 15 years behind, but ya know...
Aw, thanks, lady! I really dug Adesso as a meeting place. Personally, I'm particularly slammed in the next few months, so it will probably fall to one of my co-facilitators to plan the next one.
Hi Amory! Bummer that you can't make it this time. I havn't read the Martin books (I'm a youth services librarian, so I read almost exclusively teen and kid books), but I've seen the first season of the TV series, and I'm always eager to hear feminist critique of popular literature. Here's hoping you can make it to a meeting soon!
Hi Amory! I'm thinking the next meeting will be Saturday, January 14th, 5:30ish. I'm still working on the location, though - hence the lack of announcement. I'm thinking probably Adesso, but I need to make sure they're cool with our special needs. Thanks for asking!
The core of this group is a meeting we have once every month or two. We usually have it at a restaurant in downtown Oly, though we've been known to meet at homes or parks as well. We don't all read the same book - we go around the table and give little "booktalks" or speeches discussing or previewing our books. There are a few online discussions, but not usually of specific books, though I've seen small groups pop up to read a specific book occasionally. Does that help?
Ditto! I have plans on Saturdays 10th and 17th, but so far that's it. Just got back from Vacation, glad we're thinking about it and I didn't miss anything. ;)
Waterstreet sounds great! I haven't made it there for years. :)Amber, we never all read the same book in this bookgroup. Basically, we all get together and tell each other about the book(s) we've been reading. It's a great way to get book ideas from others. :)
Sounds good to me. Swing comes immediately to mind, assuming they'll let us reserve a big table outside on a Sunday afternoon (but that's pretty dang early...), or the Mark, though we were just there. But I'm definitely not picky. :) Does the Iron Rabbit have outdoor seating?
I like the look of the menu and the private room sounds perfect! But no, haven't checked it out myself.
