I also recently finished The Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley about a young Ojibwe woman who goes undercover for the FBI to find out who is bringing meth onto the reservation. It is a real page turner but the author also explores native culture and the efforts to keep young people involved in the preservation of native life. The theme of violence against indigenous women and the difficulty in prosecuting offenders is also a dominant theme in the story.

I gave this five stars because that's all Goodreads allows for but actually, I don't think there are enough stars in the universe to rate this book. I believe it will eventually take its rightful place in the canon of environmental (and cultural) literature along side books like Silent Spring by Rachel Carson and Walden by Thoreau. This book needs patience and perseverance on the part of the reader. It took me, a pretty fast reader, two months to read this book because it is so full of thought provoking ideas, concepts, and philosophies that I wanted to ponder, absorb and savor. When I'm reading a book I usually mark sentences or ideas that move me in some way with colored sticky tabs and this book is an absolute riot of colorful tags. Now that I've finished reading this book I plan to go back and slowly re-read each of the sentences I marked so I won't forget them.

] Horror is not my thing at all but I saw this on so many must read lists and I do like stories with native American elements so decided to read it.This is a horror story but it is also very much about Indian identity.
I will never look at at elk the same way ever!
recently finished listening to The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue I really didn't want this book to end. It's narrated by Julia Whelan, IMHO, one of the best narrators in the business. The story of a girl who makes a pact with the devil to live forever but the catch is she will instantly be forgotten by everyone she meets. Really well written, great characters.
I had read
back when it first came out but didn't really care for it. A friend recently recommended it and I decided to give a second go. I don't know what my thinking was in 2011 but I really enjoyed it this go round.
I've also read
The author, Natasha Lester, was one of the featured authors at the virtual Hachette Book Brunch this year. I was intrigued by the multiple time frames (WWII, 1947 Paris, modern day) so decided to read this book. The author's meticulously researched this book and I always enjoyed multiple threads that come together in the end. It has more romance in it than I typically like but it was a cracking good story and the part about the concentration camp called Ravenbruck was very eye opening (and gut wrenching)
Linda mentioned being a bit behind n one of her posts recently and although I have a post-it right on my computer that says "post to Goodreads", I too am a bit behind. I see I haven't posted since October. I really don't know how the time gets away so easily!!Anyway, I had decided to take a break from heavy reading to just do mysteries/police procedurals for a while
I enjoyed all these books

There are a lot of non fiction books out there right now that deal with race but I feel like I really learn about issues, cultures, etc by reading fiction. Brit Bennett's The Vanishing Half had so many thought provoking passages in it that I found myself pausing and rereading so many of them because they brought up perspectives that I hadn't thought of before. 5 stars

A truly haunting portrait of depression, suicide and grief. Although it has 466 pages it was a fast read because each chapter is only a few pages (and in some cases a few paragraphs) long. Well worth reading.

I'm a fan of Sebastion Barry and have read most of his books. His use of language is just beautiful. This book is the sequel (of sorts ) to Days Without end and is told from the viewpoint of the adopted Native American daughter of the two main characters of that book. It took me a while to get into the rhythm of her speech but once I did I really enjoyed the book.
Wow, wow, wow! Recently finished
I'm going to have to take some time to write my review because I really want it to do this book justice. 5 big stars!

I loved this book. Sweet, funny, warmhearted but also heartbreaking at times. Emmy Lake is twenty two and like most young adults is starting to navigate life finding careers, boyfriends, etc. But Emmy has the added challenge of coming of age during the Blitz. I laughed and cried in equal measure
Just this minute finished
and I had to post my thoughts immediately.I gave this book 5 stars because of the way it made me feel and think. It has its flaws and at times I would start to be critical but it is so heartwarming that I put any critical thoughts I may have had away and just let the story wash over me. Highly recommend
