Yes, exactly! It’s not the type of story one loves to hear or read about, but there is so much revealed within it about people, love of various types, culture, prejudice, irony, etc. So much that could be discussed. It’s a deep novel - not simply an upsetting story.
I finally got my hands on the audio book so I could listen to the book again. I’m only in part 9 of 40 haha so we will see if I will be able to finish it in the time allotted to me. I agree that the book seems to have quite a bit extra going on in it. I keep finding myself thinking, “is this content even necessary? Did I need to know that much back story about such a minor character? Or that much detail about something that does nothing to move the plot forward?” I get that King is considered a great writer, but I think his editor could have helped him slim this book down a bit.
Listening to the book is also reminding just how disturbing of a writer King is. My mom has always been a big fan, but I don’t think he’s much to my taste. He is obviously great at visualization and adding in details, and I do always love that from a writer, but other than that... meh. Not my style.
I totally understand now about what you were referring to when you asked if you could both love and hate a character... and I was wondering the same thing. The main character really was deeply flawed, and I tried to keep reminding myself that he was just a boy. Didn’t help all that much. In the end I appreciated the fact that he seemed to finally grow from his mistakes and turn into a better version of himself. Made the story a little easier to like.
Overall I did really enjoy the book. Incredibly well written.
I went ahead and chose this as an option for this month because I absolutely love this book and I hope you will all enjoy it as well. :)
To an extent I would. I don’t think I would want to skip out on the traditions of putting up lights and decorating the tree, listening to Christmas music, or even watching holiday movies... but I would totally skip the gift giving. My husband and I pretty much already decided we won’t worry about getting gifts for each other - there’s usually not anything we really want and for us it’s more about spending the time together. But of course now that we have a baby on the way, I don’t think that will be an option anymore either haha. What about you?
Started and finished in one day! This turned out to be a pretty cute Christmas story. At first I was thinking it was a good thing I didn’t read it until after Christmas considering it started out by pointing out all the downsides of the holiday... but I liked the cheery end. I agree that it’s hard to imagine the neighborhood pulling off the ending, but it’s a sweet thought haha.
I’m so glad you said that because I was just thinking about how I really wouldn’t want to have to drive somewhere to get the library card. Is there a fee if you’re not a resident in that area?

This book made me appreciate the California sunshine a lot more. There’s plenty of suspense that made it move fast, though I find it really hard to believe no one else died haha. Also, I understand the need for plenty of people on the berg so there were multiple suspects to try and keep you guessing, but I had a hard time keeping everyone’s character traits and such straight. I find myself feeling a bit annoyed that there was no real explanation as to why the killer didn’t take advantage of the earlier opportunity he had to murder Brian. Just doesn’t make sense to me.
After the survivors made it onto the submarine, I felt like the ending was suddenly rushed. What about all the issues with the submarine? Was it suddenly able to make the voyage to land safely? It seemed like it was starting to fall apart.
Anyways, overall I thought it was a good book. Not something I necessarily see myself eager to pick up again, but it was a nice read.
