172224 Hi all!
Sorry for going dark! I've been on the hunt for a house and wasn't expecting how draining and brain consuming it was going to be. I'll create a poll today and we can get the voting started!!!

Thanks to A.V. (woot cabin!) and Victoria for this month's nominations!

172224 Hello everyone!
I hope March is treating you well so far, and you've chewed through a healthy portion of your to-be-read stack!

Because April is Camp NaNoWriMo for the authors in this group, of which there are quite a few (*pride*), let's make April's BOTM a short story.

Nominations close on the 2oth so get a move on it!

Thanks for your lengthy response Jamie!

YES! To all of it!
The imagery in NC is AMAZING. I swear I can smell the treats as I read and feel the snow garden giving my goose bumps. I always wanted to know more about Celia's tent, watch her show, sit next to Marco and bask in their love. When he would sit in on her act and watch her in awe and with love, I choke on the emotion it had.

*clears throat*

Okay, I'm back, sorry about that. The time jumps, yeah... if anyone has read Alice in Wonderland, NC gives me the same vibe. I had to read both a few times to catch it all (or as much as I could) and even after reading some passages a few times I think there are still a few secrets hidden. Bailey's character always tricks me into thinking he's a throw away, a device to give the twins more "face time," folly, you are correct, the time shifts, became clear around that time for me as well.

Oh man, that ending. I fully warn my husband that upon finishing the book I will be a wreck for at least a week. I cry, I mop, and I love it. It's interesting to me that you think the Masters "won," did them loosing their best pupils (daughter) and even their life, not feel like a loss to you? Celia and Marco did not die for me, they live one, together, in the circus as shadows and energy, but they are together. That to me makes it a win. What's a better outcome than eternity with the one you love in a place you call home?

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and that you're willing to give it a second read. I found more tid-bits my second time through, perhaps you'll love it more? :-)

172224 OMG I love this book! I have the hard copy actually. :-)

172224 I assume by the crickets no one is interested in participating in this... would there be more interest if it were just voice?
or just a few people talking and others could listen in?
or maybe all text chat?

172224 Nominating on behalf of Donnette:
A is for Alibi (Kinsey Millhone, #1) by Sue Grafton
Feb 16, 2016 10:32PM

172224 The narrative follows a non-linear sequence—shifting at times from present to past. What did you all think about that, did it help or hurt the story? Did it confuse you or intrigue you?

172224 Would anyone be interested in participating in a google handout (or some other platform) to discuss books, words, or the BOTM?

If there's appetite for it, less discuss logistics.
Feb 02, 2016 09:09PM

172224 I am so excited for this discussion! Who read Night Circus and wants to start us off?

So this month I nominate Bridget Jones' Diary..."

February's theme is LOVE.
True love, soulmate love, broken love, love of chocolate, anything but it has to be love!

Nominate books below, I'll put the first three to a vote.
You have until January 21st.

Thanks!!!

172224 I think your first sentence nailed this Anna.
It was a SHORT story, but the author tried to do a lot. I feel like she (he?) accomplished the task she set, romance, lies, jerk ex, prejudice, the kitchen sink... Everything's pace was increased due to the length, but as a result the writing needed to be really tight for me to fall in love with the characters and I don't feel like I did in the time I was given.

The sister and boyfriend were strange, the whole family seemed to have a level of distrust and underlying hate that didn't really fit or have context.

I love the idea for the story, I wish it had been a novel to develop those connections further.

What else? Who else read it and what do you think?
-Did Evan's voice sound like that of an 18+ year old, or did he sound younger, older?
-What do you think about the drama/science hobby conversations? ( I personally loved the charades scene)

172224 LKH has another series that both Jamie and I have discussed and agreed is by far better, but I'm glad you could at least find something you enjoyed. If you're inclined, keep reading, the series gets better, I promise.

:-)

172224 Did anyone else finish this one up and have comments?

Sorry this is so late, pneumonia is a productivity killer. :-(
