In Japan's Sumida City, the local government installed 16 historical markers called Onihei Jokei, dedicated to fictional events that took place in a popular series of novels written by Shotaro Ikenami. The markers point out the locations of the novels' events and the local history that inspired them, blurring the line between fiction and real life.
Read a book that combines a real historical event with fictional ones. For a historical event, we are looking for an event of limited scope (location, time, participants) that someone could put up a historical marker to memorialize. For example, D-Day not all of World War II. Or the building of the first Transcontinental Railroad, not all of the Industrial Revolution. Your choice must not be simply set during the same time period. The event must be featured or essential to the storyline, not simply mentioned or observed in a newspaper or on television by the characters.
Examples: A true crime book that includes fictionalized accounts from the killer or victim's perspective (In Cold Blood recounts the 1959 murder of the Clutter family using invented dialogue and scenes), or a novel where the fictional characters take part in a real historical event (Gone With the Wind would be okay because a plot point is Sherman's March to the Sea, but the American Civil War by itself would be too broad).
The Second Mrs. Astor- Titanic event
The Spectacular- New York Hotel Bombing
The First Hunt- The Green River Serial Killer
None Left to Tell - The Mountain Meadows Massacre
Required: State the event

The summer season has a whirlwind of birthdays in my inner circle. As we enter the Fall season, birthday festivities calm down as holidays ramp up. But, there are three special birthdays in the Fall that I look forward to celebrating!
Choose an option and read one book for that option.
Required: State the option
Option 1: Happy Birthday, Zach!
My partner’s birthday is the next one on our calendar! He is my favorite person in the entire world and we love to celebrate him, but he likes to hide from the limelight. As his birthday falls on Halloween, our birthday celebrations for Zach are often doubled up as Halloween celebrations.
To celebrate Zach’s birthday, read a book that has one of the following items on the cover:
A pumpkin, black cat, witch’s hat, skull or full moon on the cover. Any part of the image will work, as long as you can tell what it is.
For this task:
The pumpkin can be carved or whole

The cat must be an all black domestic cat

The witch’s hat must be a traditional costume style witch’s hat

The skull can be human or animal

Required: post the cover
Option 2: Happy Birthday, AJ!
My brother’s birthday is at the end of November, sometimes vying for time around Thanksgiving. Carving out time for a birthday dinner is always something we prioritize, even in the hectic holiday season. Usually we end up at a steakhouse, but what we ALWAYS have is ice cream cake.
To celebrate AJ’s birthday, read a book that has a 3+ letter title word (subtitles excluded) made from the letters in either ANTHONY JOSEPH or in ICE CREAM CAKE, excluding the word “the”.
Letters may be used as often as they appear.
Required: state the phrase and word.
Option 3: Happy Birthday, Nook!
My cat Nook turns 12 this November! He’s a sweet, social boy unless you’re his brother, Pik. Our days are filled with entertainment watching our two fur-babies act the way that all cats do: unpredictably and ridiculously. Because all owners of cats know that when you give one a treat, you give both a treat, we are using both Nook and Pik for this task! Over the years, they have earned the nicknames “Curly Tail” (Nook) and “Monkey Tail” (Pik).
To celebrate Nook’s birthday, read a book where the author’s first and last initials can be found in either Curly OR Monkey.
You may use the letters as often as they appear. If the book has multiple authors, only one author must satisfy the condition.
Required: State the word used

To celebrate this season’s bonus theme of “It's A Wonderful World - Historic Sites,” I wanted to take a tour of some of my home state of Iowa’s 29 National Historic Landmarks (NHLs). According to the National Park Service, NHLs are “historic properties that illustrate the heritage of the United States” and each one "represents an outstanding aspect of American history and culture.” Since we are focusing on historical sites, all books claimed for this task must have the MPG Historical or Historical Fiction.
In addition, your book may have the MPG Graphic Novels, Comics, Manga, or Sequential Art.
Choose one option and read one book for that option.
Books must have an MPG of Historical or Historical Fiction The MPG may be embedded IE Historical Romance
Required: State the option.
Option 1: The Surf Ballroom
This site in Clear Lake, Iowa is the location where Rock and Roll legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson gave their last performances on February 2, 1959. They all perished in a plane crash the next day. This day is often referred to as "The Day the Music Died."
Read a book that has a 4+ title word (subtitles excluded) made from the letters in the phrase THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED. Letters may be used as often as they appear.
Required: State the word
Option 2: Precontact Sites
There are a number of NHLs in Iowa that are archaeological sites connected to Indigenous People and date to a time prior to contact with European settlers.
For this option, read a book with a 3+ word title (subtitles excluded) where all of the title words begin with a letter in ONE of these site names:
BLOOD RUN
DAVIS ORIOLE EARTH LODGE
INDIAN VILLAGE
TOOLESBORO MOUNDS
KIMBALL VILLAGE
PHIPPS SITE
Required: State the site name used
Option 3: The Amana Colonies
The seven villages in East-Central Iowa that make up the Amana Colonies were settled by German “Radical Pietists” in the 1850s. These people were persecuted in Germany. They then came to Iowa by way of New York. The Colonies were largely self-sufficient and operated as a communal society until 1932. To celebrate their German heritage, the Colonies celebrate Oktoberfest each year. 2025 will be the 60th annual Oktoberfest celebration and also the 60th anniversary of being named a National Historic Landmark. Read a book that was first published in the month of October in any year 1965-2025 (inclusive).
Option 4: Politicians and Government
Several landmarks in Iowa have a connection to politicians or government in Iowa. These include: Old Capitol, located in Iowa City (the second state capital before it moved to Des Moines); Terrace Hill (Des Moines), the current Governor’s Mansion; the James B. Weaver House (Bloomfield), the home of a US Congressman and presidential candidate; William P. Hepburn House (Clarinda), the home of an 11-term US Congressman; and the Herbert Hoover Birthplace (West Branch), the birthplace of the 31st US President.
For this option, read a book by a single author whose first and last initials can be found in either politics OR govern

Korean culture seems to be really trending right now, and I'm here for it. Including booking a trip to Seoul for early 2026!
Pick an option and read one book
Required: State the option
Option 1: Read a book that is set at least 50% in Korea (North or South)
Required: If setting is not evident from the Goodreads main page, provide a reference.

Required: If not evident from the Goodreads main page, provide a reference.

1. First, identify any tasks involved in your book change with a separate post for each task involved.
2. Copy ALL the task information where the book was claimed for points.
--A) Include the task number, the options used, and a link to each book originally claimed in the task.
--B)The easiest way to copy a post and retain all information:
----1) Click "edit" at the bottom of the original post
----2) Copy from that screen to copy the html
3. Paste that information into a new post and note that you are "UNCLAIMING" the task at the top of the post.
--A) The moderator will remove any credit for the books, points, BB, GO, NF from your totals.
--B) The book(s) in the task are now available to be used for any task as if they had never been claimed.
4. The 'unclaimed' task will need to be reposted as if you were originally claiming credit for the task.

1. ONLY ONE TASK MAY BE INCLUDED IN A POST
2. Include your Readerboard name at the TOP of your post.
--A) Not required if your Readerboard name is the same as the name that appears in the shaded area above your posts.
3. Include Task # and a short Task Description.
4. To claim a task in Completed Tasks, the book you use MUST exist on Goodreads.
--A) If your book is not in the Goodreads database, you may ask a Goodreads Librarian for help in this thread: Anyone with librarian stats....
5. A link to the book edition that qualifies it for the task MUST be included along with the specific task posting information. If you read an audiobook, please link to a print or digital edition that shows a page count. See Verifying Page Counts section of the Rules for more information.
--A) For instructions on adding a book link, see post 1 of Add book/author/cover Instructions in General Help.
--B) If no link, then NO points, NO Big Book tickets, NO Golden Oldies tickets, NO It's A Fact tickets.
--C) If the task involves an element on the cover of the book, you MUST include the cover itself in your post. The cover will be considered the book link when adding it according to the instructions above.
6. Include a brief explanation to clarify how your book(s) fit the task if it is not obvious.
7. Task creators should update posts 2 and/or 3 in their Help Threads with approved books, but the responsibility for that pre-approval information lies with the poster.
--A) The moderators will not search the help threads to look for pre-approvals. If you had a book pre-approved, including a link to the Help Thread approval may help keep you out of the Questions/Problems thread.
8. A newly completed task must be listed clearly and separately - do not include it in a list with previously completed tasks or partially completed tasks.
9. If your book has the genre "childrens" or "kids" on its main page, it must meet the criteria specified in the Rules of the Challenge.
--A) All AR Bookfinder information MUST be posted when the book is claimed for points or no points will be awarded (You can copy the AR BookFinder ratings)
ex. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
IL: MG - BL: 7.3 - AR Pts: 17.0
--B) Books that have an IL designation of MG+, UG, or UY (in the UK) may be used with no restrictions (other than general SRC and specific task requirements). However, you must state the IL designation when you post the book.
--C)If a book has "childrens" or "kids" listed as a main page genre and has been ok'd in the Not Really for Kids thread, you must include the post number or google document line approval when you post in Completed Tasks.
10. If you want to claim a Golden Oldies, Big Books ticket, or It's A Fact ticket you must specifically say so in your post - merely including a tally at the beginning or end of your post is not sufficient.
--A) Make sure to note "Golden Oldies," or "GO" or "Big Books ticket" or "BB ticket", or "It's A Fact or "NF ticket" in your post.
--B) The BB, GO, NF claim must be made with the specific book posting - a list at the end or beginning of the post is not sufficient.
--C) If you are claiming a GO ticket, you must include the year in which the book was first published in your post along with the book posting for the task.
--D) If you are claiming a BB ticket, you must include the number of pages in the book. Be sure that the link you provide goes to the edition with the correct number of pages.
11. If you choose to read a book contained in an "omnibus" edition, or a play in a collection (see Rule 4 in the Format Specific Requirements), you must identify this in your post.
--A) If you do choose to read an element isolated from an aggregate work, you MUST include a link to a separately published work that relates to the isolated title. This will determine the page count and eligibility of the book.
12. If your book is an ebook with no page count or audiobook without a print or digital edition, you must have it approved for length before posting by asking in the Book page verification thread: Book Verification-no print edition in General Help.
--A) Your post must include the line number of the approval in the spreadsheet or the post number in which the item was approved for length.
13. If the task requires that a particular genre be found on the book's main page, check that the genre is there at the time you post.
--A) If it is not, but you had the genre pre-noted in the help thread or the genre verification thread, include a link to the approval post in your completed task posting.
14. Where a task requires multiple books, all books required for the task MUST be included in the same post - do not make a separate claim for each book.
15. While it is OK to shift books between tasks during a challenge, you must follow the UNCLAIMING procedures if the books have already been claimed for a task.
16. If a task contains multiple options, your post must specify the options that you are using.
17. NEVER delete a post from the Completed Tasks thread.
--A) You can edit the post to replace all the text with “***DELETED***” but leave the post in the thread so the other post numbers do not shift.
18. Include an up to date total of points in your post. (For purposes of Moderators' Pet, math errors will be forgiven!)
--A) Remember to check the Readerboard or Questions/Problems threads to make sure you have accurate totals for your post.

My reading goal for the year was to read 125 books. I usually meet or exceed my goal, but this year I seem to be struggling to meet my goal. I have decided to try to prioritize shorter books so I can hopefully meet my goal.
Read a book that is between 100-250 pages.
Option 2:
Another goal I have is to try to concentrate on reading series that I have started and not start any new ones.
Read a book that is #2 or later in a series-whole numbers only.
Required: Series must be listed on book page
Option 3:
Since this is an It's a Fact challenge and I am focused on my 2025 reading goals, read a non-fiction book from one of these lists:
Nonfiction Published in Year: 2025
Memoirs Published in Year: 2025

I have been a Pearl Jam fan since my first listen when their first album, Ten, was released. I saw them twice on their most recent tour and at both shows they played a lot of songs from Ten.
In honor of this band read a book, that is at least 350 pages, from one of the following two options:
Required: State the option.

Pick one option below and read one book for it.

Option 1
My dad hunted every fall with my brothers for deer and pheasant. We always had a hunting dog that my dad spent hours training to assist him in the field. Our family enjoyed many meals from what they got in those outings.
Read a book with any of the words HUNT, HUNTER or HUNTING in the title/subtitle. Word must be exact, no variations allowed.
Option 2
I have been a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers. There wasn't much choice if you grew up in our Wisconsin household, as football dominated our weekends all fall every year. Years later I am still an avid fan.
Read a book whose cover is at least 40% green as determined by tineye https://labs.tineye.com/color/

Option 3
We will be spending Halloween in St. Louis this year with our son's family. Halloween in St. Louis is a HUGE deal, with many households having outdoor fire pits going, elaborate decorations and much adult participation along with the kids. It also has a unique tradition that I have never encountered anywhere else - the trick or treaters must tell a riddle or joke that somehow relates to their costume in order to get their treat.
Read a book by an author whose first OR last name can be spelled from the phrase
RIDDLE OR JOKE. Letters may only be used as often as they appear.
Option 4
Our daughter lives and works in New York City. We will be visiting her this fall and continuing our exploration of that amazing place. One thing we plan to do while we're there is to see the Broadway show Operation Mincemeat.
Read a book from a series where one word of 5+ letters in the title/subtitle/series can be found in the phrase OPERATION MINCEMEAT. Letters may only be used as often as they appear.
Option 5
We had Norwegian neighbors move in next door straight from Norway when I was a kid. Anna and I were taken to a Scandinavian store to learn to knit on Saturdays. Picture two kids ages 9 and 10 sitting around a table with a bunch of older ladies - that was us! Knitting can be done year round, but fall always brings on a strong desire to dig into my stash of luscious yarn to find my next project.
Read a book with at least one skein of yarn and two knitting needles shown on the cover. The skein of yarn can be partial as long as it is clearly identifiable as a skein of yarn,

I saw Pulp live for the first time in 30 years this summer - amazing! - so we'll celebrate their brilliance in this task.
Pick one option below
Required: State the option
Option 1: Two book option, no page count minimums.
Read one book for each task below
Task 1: Different Class was issued in October 1995, and was an instant classic with some outstanding tracks!
Read a book that shares a title word with one of the track titles (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differe... - use the original version only, not the Japanese / German / deluxe versions)
words must be at least 3 letters long (so ignore F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E!) and must match exactly, no exceptions!
2000 can be used as a word - but must match exactly
Required: state the track title and word
Task 2:More was issued in June 2025, and is critically viewed as a return to form.
Read a book that shares a title word with one of the track titles (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_(P... - use the core only, not the Japanese additional track)
words must be at least 3 letters long, and excludes "THE", and must match exactly, no exceptions!
Required: state track title and word
Option 2: One book option, minimum page count of 500 pages
Read a book that meets the requirements of both tasks in option 1.

As a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles and Maryland Terrapins fan, I’m pumped to kick off football season watching the Eagles & Terps score some touchdowns!
This two-book challenge celebrates the thrill of football season with prompts inspired by the Eagles’ gritty spirit and the Terps’ college pride.
Pick two different options and read one book for each.
Required: State the options chosen.
Option 1: Fly, Eagles, Fly!
Nothing beats the roar of Lincoln Financial Field when the Eagles soar. This prompt channels that green-and-silver energy! Read a book with “fly,” “eagle,” or “green” in the title (standalone, no subtitles, but possessives allowed).
Option 2: Testudo’s Turtle Power
The Maryland Terps’ mascot, Testudo, brings luck to College Park. Let’s honor that turtle tenacity! Read a book set in a college or university (any genre).
Required: If the college setting isn’t clear from the Goodreads description, provide a reference.
Option 3: Game-Winning Romance
Football season’s passion spills into romance—think tailgate dates and cozy stadium kisses! Read a sports romance featuring football (pro or college).
Required: Please provide reference if it's not clear from the Goodreads page.
Option 4: Tailgate Traditions
From Philly’s passionate tailgates to Maryland’s spirited rallies, football brings communities together!
Read a novel set at least 75% in Pennsylvania or Maryland
Required: Provide reference to location if not obvious on book page.
Option 5: Victory Colors
Show your team pride with the bold colors of the Eagles (green, silver, white, black) or Terps (red, white, black, gold/yellow)!
Read a novel with a cover featuring the Eagles’ colors or Terps’ colors as the dominant color scheme. Covers must have a combined total of at least 50%, with each color being represented. To allow for using Tineye, grey will be used to denote silver.

Required: Post the cover and state the team used.
Option 6: Team Initials All-Stars
The Eagles and Terps shine with every letter of their names, from Philly’s spirit to Testudo’s heart! Read a book by a single author whose initials (first and last name) are found in PHILADELPHIA EAGLES or MARYLAND TERRAPINS.
Required: State the team chosen for the initials

I've been thinking about my father a lot lately, so I've decided to write a task in tribute to him. In many ways, he was a truly strange individual, so I can lay a lot of my weirdness at his feet :)
Read 2 books, one from 2 different options.
Children's books are welcome, and a graphic novel may be used for one of the tasks if you wish.
Because my father was a rather large gentleman, I'm going to set a minimum page count to a rotund 500 pages.
Required: State which options you chose.
Option 1:
My father's name was Phillip, 2 L's. He always said his name was superior to the one-L'd Philip, because he could "give 'em L twice."
For this task, choose a book with Phillip, Philip, Phillips, Philips, or Phil as either author name (e.g. Philip Roth, Susan Phillips), main character name (e.g. The Big Sleep's Philip Marlowe) or part of the title/subtitle/series name (e.g. The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil)
Option 2:
My father was a lifelong gambling addict, specifically poker. He frequently played for (relatively - we weren't rich!) high stakes, so it wasn't uncommon when I was a kid to have him come home with a new car one week and lose it in the pot the next week.
For this task take the chorus of Kenny Rogers' The Gambler and read a book with one of these verbs in the title: HOLD, FOLD, WALK, RUN, COUNT, SIT. Words must be exact but do not need to function as a verb in the title.
You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done
Option 3:
When I was a newborn, my father put my entire foot into his mouth, just to say he did it. "I once put her entire foot into my mouth" were then the words with which he first greeted every boy I ever dated.
For this task, read a book with at least one entire bare foot on the cover. We must be able to see all the toes.
This counts:

Option 4:
My dad liked to show me off at the card club, so he was always teaching me weird skills. When I was 3 years old, he taught me how to spell, aloud, antidisestablishmentarianism. After a bunch of practice, I could rattle it off without even thinking. Still can, in fact.
For this task, read a book whose single author has initials that are found consecutively forward in order in the word ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM. You can disregard middle initials, or use them if you can find an author that fits - I can't think of one. Example: TA will work but not AT.
Option 5:
When I was in grade school, there was a lot of schoolyard cred to be gained by having a dad who had done certain things. My dad was, at various times, a policeman, a sailor in the navy, an ambulance driver, a private detective, a dance instructor, and a competitive weight lifter/bodybuilder. I got hella dad cred.
For this task, read a book where the main character has one of the above professions. I'll also take EMT for ambulance driver.
Required: Provide a reference if it is not obvious from the book page.
Option 6:
When my dad died a few years ago, the one thing everyone who knew him commented on and said they'd miss was his great (albeit weird) sense of humor.
Read a book with MPG Humor. The weirder the better.
