35559 The Arabian Nights by Anonymous

he tales told by Shahrazad over a thousand and one nights to delay her execution by the vengeful King Shahriyar have become among the most popular in both Eastern and Western literature, as recounted by Sir Francis Burton. From the epic adventures of "Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp" to the farcical "Young Woman and her Five Lovers" and the social criticism of "The Tale of the Hunchback", the stories depict a fabulous world of all-powerful sorcerers, jinns imprisoned in bottles and enchanting princesses. But despite their imaginative extravagance, the Tales are anchored to everyday life by their realism, providing a full and intimate record of medieval Islam.'

Could see his journalistic background. It was very readable.

So there were problems with the chemicals in the treatment plant, so they had to drain the system and get new chemicals. The new chemicals they added the same problem came up. They seem to be trying to fix it still, but no idea of time span for that.

My work place has had water throughout, but the kids school hasn't so homeschooling has been needed in among the normal stuff plus Christmas prep. On Thursday, school told us they couldn't open Friday because the water delivery they'd been waiting for since Wednesday hadn't arrived. Meanwhile the water company have delivered my work 1000 2L water bottles that I need to work out what on earth to deal with. Not the problems I expected when I became a partner and started running the business!

I feel bad complaining though because I'm so lucky to live somewhere that has safe hot and cold water on tap the vast majority of the time and where I'm not facing drought etc.

35559 The Quiet American by Graham Greene

This was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it a lot.

35559 The Grinch does not approve of the fun we have been having, especially not talk of another group challenge. Bah Humbug and enjoy this selection from him

35559 Latest news today is they don’t know how long it will take, but at least 10 days. The water is ok for washing from midday but needs boiling before drinking or cooking with it. I’m hoping for normally functioning water as a Christmas present.

35559 That’s a fantastic bookcase!

I’m struggling a bit this week - our water has been out since Saturday (affecting a town of 24,000 people). Everything is just that little bit harder and the kids school has had to shut. Reading is happening v slowly.

35559 I’ll join in too. Will be reading slower than you all though.

You didn't think we were done with the minis did you?

35559 I’ve got 2 books left it turns out because I got the children’s book word count wrong. Can definitely do one U, maybe 2.
Nov 19, 2025 05:14AM

35559 I can read another U book, but that will take me to my cap and the series I've got isn't working well for the minis atm.

35559 I’m off on a bicycle trip now. Hopefully it’ll fit for a letter or it might hang in the ether for a few days just short of finished.

35559 Are the mods getting too predictable for you?
Nov 14, 2025 01:30AM

35559 I've found a series called Unbreakable which I'm going to work my way through which should give us 3 Us if I keep going. The first is Heartbreaker.
