40475 it I am considering a book I actually tend to read the 3 star reviews cause I want to know what people think were the problems that could have been fixed to make it better, without people ranting or being over adulating.

40475 I came to goodreads after karen pestered me for months about needing to be on the site. the first group of friends I made on goodreads were all work people. I don't have any phone numbers for any work peeps that I know on goodreads, although I have greg's email.

Some of my friends joined from seeing posts I made about books using the site on facebook those people I interact with in a lot of ways.

there is one person I met here (JOEL) that I periodically send books to be cause he likes what I like and I like vindication for my tastes.

I am friends with a few people from here on facebook but just people who have friended me either entirely or mostly. most of my communications on facebook are with people I know from a philosophy forum I have been a part of much longer than goodreads.
40475 yeah I'm the only person who doesn't bother to read blurbs a majority of the time
40475 anxiety and depression by scott king (impulse buy at the counter at st. marks)
thomas the imposter ($4 at strand)
the lovers dictionary (amazon recommended it)
how to fail (karen handed it to me)
the girl must die (it was green)

I am fairly impulsive
40475 yeah I do it all the time. there are several books I read because the covers were white. the book I'm currently reading. Fated by browne I decided to read because it looked terrible (it is in fact not at all terrible) and was sitting in a pile of books to put away when I needed to find a book to buy.

40475 i asked karen to review some books once but that's just cause other people got too and I felt left out. sometimes I ask greg for reviews.

40475 It was my review of one day, because I read it while it was still on back order and people were obsessed with it, but not many had read it yet.

40475 when nietzsche wept:

This is one of my favorite books. It is not only a book about philosophy vs. psychology. It is about the fight to not give up on the mind, as Nietzsche denies constantly that their is anything wrong with him outside of his physical symptoms. This book help us to understand how to think about the people that we just can't understand.
40475 I don't think I actually will change my mind about a book because I read a review. But I do very much believe that reading is a personal experience. And for me the experience of the book is generally how I feel while reading it, so while musing and critique is interesting it doesn't change the reading experience for me.

For example, I had a generally unpleasant experience reading infinite jest, but I have read a lot of really positive reviews. I usually agree with most of the positive reviews and I know some people at least agree the things I say are also true about the books. Generally I think it comes down to a recognition that different things are important to different people in books. So if anything reading someone else's review helps me understand myself better as a reader. I mean I get now that character continuity is really really important to me (and that when I say this it probably means something different then it does to other people).

Then I use this kind of information when I recommend books to my friends.

40475 actually I am more annoyed with 3 star ratings without reviews. cause it's never totally clear if 3 is. "It was good I'd recommend it but I"m not jumping up and down" or "it was fine"

40475 first. I totally agree on the psychology pet peeve, so if there are any specific books you think I should avoid let me know.

I actually do rate books I haven't finished, if I don't intend to read anymore of them. I have a different shelf for books I intend to finish just not any time soon. But they usually get 3 stars and I say I didn't finish them and why I didn't finish them. Mostly because books I didn't finish tend to very long books that I enjoyed, but at some point felt like I stopped getting anything out of. For example, I hit a point in magic mountain where I could predict he ending and I felt like the book just kept going and going and going, and I didn't really want to read it anymore. At that point I generally feel like I will dislike a book more if I continue to read it. so I stop and say how I feel about it at he point I stop. I know this bothers some people, but I also know people who read the way I read and I think it's worthwhile to say, try this even if you don't finish it the part you read will be great.

also, I have re-evaluated the star system for me 1 star means hate, 2 stars mean dislike, I know this is wrong according to good reads I don't care.

I have a good number of one star ratings, the ones that don't have reviews are things that I read for school. I do agree that I hate one star ratings without reviews, so I might have to write some.

40475 sometimes they are printed like readers for school. I hate that.

40475 okay from my survey which is a bias sample based on my taste. both cronin and dorsey are too classy to print he marketing campaign on the book.

relevant listings
Coehlo lists "online prootion; print features and reviews"
in hanuman's hands lists, " online early reviewer programs, including first look and library thing; blog campaign"
geoff dyer lists (inside the back cover cause he's a little classy) "Online outreach and promotion, including literary and travel blogs"

toni jordan is weirdly also too classy to tell us, or has no marketing strategy

the back of several of the ARCs at the store include under: marketing strategy, using arcs. I'll see if I can find one that says it in a second.
Dec 24, 2010 07:34AM

40475 are you sure your publisher isn't sending out arcs?
Dec 23, 2010 06:36PM

40475 i liked that suggestion

40475 i've sort of been regretting reading or telling people I read or something recently.
