The biggest problem with publishers is the waiting. Not just for them to publish your book but for them to reject you. Most publishers will reject you, even if you have an awesome book. If you are lucky you will get feedback, but they're "busy" people so even then it won't be anything more than what your average beta will do.I approached tens of publishers when I first went about publishing and was so excited every day when I checked the post - nothing came. Eventually I got a few rejection emails. I had some really good feedback - "we liked your style but the book isn't what we're looking for..."
Then I self-published and found the process more rewarding.
Last year I published another book and I didn't even think about approaching a publisher. There is so much work to do - sorting out query letters, a synopsis and any other hoop the publishing company wants you to jump through I just figured I'd do it myself.
I did my covers myself but I pay for promotion. I'm not a millionaire but I do have 20+ reviews and have had at least 3000 books downloaded so I'm quite happy with what I've achieved.
The thing is the big publishing companies are looking at indies and the success they are having and will find you if they think they can make money from you.
If I was you I'd send out your query letters for the experience - don't hold your breath - and then go for self-publishing.
That's my two cents.
Good luck!
Hi All,This isn't exactly self-promotion but I didn't want to step on any toes so I thought I would post here.
I am just about to release my new book The Running Game, which is a futuristic crime thriller.
I've posted the first chapter on my blog and I would really love to just get a few thoughts on what people think and whether, based on that chapter, they'd want to read more.
There's a poll on the blog so if anyone has the time to just cast their eye over the chapter I'd be so grateful.

I've been on KDP Select for two weeks. I was on Smashwords and Lulu before this (as well as Amazon). It was a difficult decision joining KDP, most of my sales were coming from Smashwords (I'd sold about 70 copies since publishing in September compared to 10 with Amazon).January is a busy month for me and I knew I wouldn't be able to do much promotion so I figured I should just got for it. In three days I sold over 1000 books and apart from a mention on Twitter and FB I didn't push it at all.
My book went up into the top 3 of it's catagory and is selling at least one copy every day, which may not be big bacon to some, but it was more than I thought was possible back in December.
I think because KDP Select is new a lot of people are still hearing about it and checking it out, most people in the world have an Amazon account and as Kindle grows for people less comfortable with the web KDP might offer them the convenience Smashwords and the like don't.
The question really is will KDP be so hot when the novelty wears off?
