It's starting to pick up now. As soon as the baddies get their bio cargo on Heimdall. This series is more of a guilty pleasure than a serious conversation invoking story. I am enjoying the way it is broken up, and it reinforces my love for short chapters and concise storytelling. The pictures and different formats of the documents give the story another level of realism.
Similar to the first book it has the same format, but it looks like different main characters. I'm wondering if the writers are going to continue to follow their "all side characters must die" style from the first book. These characters feel younger, but maybe that is because they aren't running for their lives yet. I want to see more from the trial that they set up in the beginning, but this book looks more like a side quest right now. Hoping that changes.
A lot of the suspicions I had on how this one ended came true, but the authors did a great job of putting everything in doubt. I did not expect the AI to begin manipulating Kady and impersonate Ezra. I actually thought Ez was infected. It was a nice twist on the story. I've already begun the next book in the series. I was hoping there would be more of the depressed AI doing depressed AI things, but the ending was worth it.
It always is! I got to spend it with my father's new wife's family. They are country and enjoy talking about what medication their friends are taking. I do not find that kind of conversation stimulating at all. I think I would have enjoyed it more if there had been kids there.
Hope everyone reading has been enjoying this in between all of the holiday hustle. I have all my shopping done now and a 3 day weekend coming up. I'm going to try to read a bunch in the next few days. So far the book has been interesting and I am wondering what is going to happen when they wake up the AI. The feeling of impending doom in the book gives me all the smiles inside. The only things that are grating on me so far is how the authors are creating ways to kill off anyone that has a connection to the 2 main characters.
Still enjoying the book thus far. The way the documents are broken up into bite sized pieces it is easy to tear through them. Kady is the type of character that I love to write. She's like a ninja spy hacker. Ezra on the other hand is a bit sarcastic, but otherwise kind of bland. Kady is pushing the story while Ezra is letting it happen to him. This feels like it was originally a kind of role play between the two authors that they built up over time. I've done this with a few friends, but it always ended up being 2 separate stories. They were always afraid to mess with my characters and whenever I would do anything with theirs, they would quickly hit the undo button. These authors may have had an outline to help move things along and keep the story on the same wavelength.
I'm just not sure if I like the format because it seems like the story could jump around quite a bit. It could end up being a bunch of short stories with many different characters that you never really get invested in. I'm still only a few pages in, so we'll see how it goes. I'm enjoying it so far. I also found it amusing how they redacted certain words.
There are 3 books in this series. If we all agree that it is good then we might finish out the series. I'll post the question later once we've had a chance to mostly read it. The sequels should be stand alone books if they are molded from this same format.
There was a book I read by Harry Turtledove that I thought would be interesting as a movie. It was about how pagan gods were actual beings like Giants who gained power through belief. Some of them oppressed their believers with an iron fist. They had certain powers and could see through the eyes of their believers. It was called Between the Rivers. Also the Wool series would be fantastic in TV series or Trilogy movie format. Humankind living in a Silo because the air outside is toxic. When someone breaks the law they send them outside to clean the camera lens which is their only connection to an outside world that looks bleak and desolate.
The December book of the Month is Illuminae. It looks interesting so far. Hope you all enjoy!Link: https://www.amazon.com/Illuminae-File...
I just finished the first Chapter and this book is interesting in how it is composed. The book seems to be a bunch of fictional documents that tell a story in parts through interview transcripts, emails, etc... It starts off with a bang, but I'm not sure if I like the format yet.
All the books up for voting are up on the bookshelf now. I changed one of the books because it was the 2nd in a series and I was unaware when I first posted it.
Sorry this is up so late. I am on vacation and have been playing in some big poker tournaments. Can't be on the phone or computer while at the poker table! Anyway there was only one nomination this month, so I am going to add a few books to give it some competition. I'll add all of these to the bookshelf for nominees later today. I only have a few minutes to post this. Will have voting up until Friday.Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight
Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Zer0es by Chuck Wendig
The Fold by Peter Clines
Serengeti by JB Rockwell
Tammy you are a hero for pushing through. Needless to say... we won't have the sequel for next month's book.
This book picks up a bit more once the bounty hunters become involved. It has been very enjoyable since then.
It's time to begin nominations for the next book in the club! I have made a few changes after what happened this past month. (Don't worry authors, we ❤ you and there are other ways to get nominated)
2.) Books must be available in print and ebook formats
3.) I reserve the right to include or exclude any books nominated from the monthly voting for any reason.
4.) If a book you nominated is chosen then please take part in the conversation. Inactive members are less likely to have their nominations included in the future.
